Whether guns were banned in city limits is irrelevant to conservatives; what matters is the idea of a heroic society where ordinary men went armed and were always ready to fight to protect themselves, their property, and by implication truth, justice, and the American way ... and that such a place can exist again.

The reality of the Wild West - a place where people were trying very hard to create civilization, not subvert or escape it - threatens that ideal, and so it must be buried and those who try to uncover it must be attacked as nihilistic deconstructionists trying to destroy something good and precious to Americans.

This is Jean-Jacques Rousseau's evil twin: human beings (i.e. middle class white Protestant Americans) are naturally virtuous and need only to be set free - free from states and their laws, from society and its hanging judge presiding over the court of public opinion, from any form or idea held to be alien to the state of nature - in order to fully exercise that virtue.

The idea that any law, structure, etc. can do anything but warp human beings into tyrants and their craven and servile minions is alien and abhorrent to this mentality.
