  •  Here's a rolicking display of Lincoln's opinion (7+ / 0-)

on the issue of slavery in the territories, and tangentially the Dred Scott decision, filled with not a few barbs against his perennial nemesis Stephen Douglas.

It's a great speech, but starts off a little dry. But to make it go down easier, it's read by Sam Waterston. It is well worth the hour+ it takes to listen to it. This is American rhetoric at its best.

This speech, given by Lincoln at New York's Cooper Union in 1860, all but sealed his nomination for president. It's a brilliant originalist take-down of Dred Scott (Lincoln was no originalist, but Douglas made an originalist defense of Dred Scott, so Lincoln chose that as his battleground. And won.)
