  •  You humble me, I've never been able to find an owl (6+ / 0-)

nest, even though owls are common around here. I was just out on the back porch a couple minutes ago looking to see if any new moths had been drawn to the light and there was a barred owl calling while I was out there.

I heard, but did not see, a yellow billed cuckoo today. They have such a distinctive call, no mistaking it for anything else. Our purple martins have vanished. They were here for a couple days and then disappeared. I'm not sure what to think. They squabbled with the tree swallows when they got here last week but the same thing happened last year and they went ahead and raised a brood on the opposite of the house from the swallows so I wouldn't have thought that would drive them away this year but something apparently has. Bummer. And nothing has shown any interest in the new martin house yet, unless you count the house sparrows that I've been chasing off it daily since I stood it up.

A robin has been singing up a storm from one of the maples in the front yard so I expect there is a nest up there somewhere, but I can't see it among the leaves.

Still have pine siskins here. Can't imagine why they haven't headed north yet. Puzzling.

Just give me some truth. John Lennon
