  •  Talk to the boss. (14+ / 0-)
when the priest of st. francis of assissi down the block is distressed over the failure of congress to address assault weapons and guns, the legislators should damn well listen.
Talk to his superiors, too many of whom are shills for the GOP because of its position on contraception, abortion and marriage equality trumping all.  They bear some responsibility (not all) for the GOP success in 2010.

I'm glad that you're safe, and hope that your neighbors never have to go through that again.

    •  this particular priest is not the problem - he is (15+ / 0-)

the one who ministers to these troubled kids and their parents when they have to bury one they have lost.

he is with us - he is upset and quietly angered at the rejection of the gun legislation.  he is upset about assault weapons - he questions why they are made and says to me that it is all about money and profit for those who make them.

he is on our side of these issues - and he is on the ground on the forefront of these problems.

sadly, we will go through this again - over and over, until the real issues of poverty are addressed.

these kids see no future other than the "now" - they don't see a society that will allow them to grow and flourish - they only see dead end of prison or dead, so they live for the now.

their "families" are the gang members who look out for them.  no one else does.  the families can't - they are trying so hard to make the rent, pay the bills, put food on the table.

the gangs around here are either latino or african american - and they fight each other - when they are not fighting among their own little groups.

last night, another man was shot in e.p.a. - the neighbor who spoke of it said some speculated that this might have been retaliation for that shooting.  the police said they don't have enough information yet to confirm that - but it is part of the pattern... one gang shoots someone, the other gang retaliates - then the first one responds to the second.

this reminds me so much of the mafia wars when i lived in ny.  i lived 4 blocks from where joey gallo (gambino family) was shot.  the social club next door to my building became the drive by target for his gang coming to fire on the genovese "family" members in the club.

joey flaunted his "power" by celebrating his birthday at umberto's clam house on mulberry st., well inside the genovese turf - not a smart move for crazy joe.  it was his last move.

up until the gallo murder (at umberto's clam house on mulberry st), little italy was the safest place in the city to live.  not afterward.

      i moved within the week.
