The jury duty everybody gets called for is to be on a trial jury.  I think they're called petit juries.
I don't know a soul who's ever been called to serve on a grand jury.  Does the District Attorney get to hand-pick grand jurors?  Is that why they say the DA could get a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich?

We're all pretty strange one way or another; some of us just hide it better. "Normal" is a dryer setting.

For some reason I am a magnet for jury duty.   I've been called, I forget now, at least 10 times over the last 3 decades, at every level of the court system.

I forget how the jury questioned differed, if any, for the grand jury.   (I will soon have opportunity to refresh my memory.)  But the work was pretty routine:  so-and-so arrested, cop gives particulars, fair cause for a trial, yup, on to the next.  The courts are sufficiently clogged with cases to the point where anything shaky enough to give concern to grand jurors, is fairly unlikely to make it onto the schedule.  I mean, I'm sure it happens, or should happen if the process is working correctly, but statistically it's a long wait.

depends which courts you're talking about, but I have a friend who was called to serve on a federal grand jury.  It was for at least a month or more, not sure what the schedule was, but I think she was still able to go to work most days.
A lot of child pornography an cigarette cases, according to her.
