  •  He's an entertainer (7+ / 0-)

and not a journalist.  He might think he's a journalist, maybe... but his real role is to mirror what he thinks the public wants to hear, not actually report on anything.  His job is to play a journalist, a voice of consensus official opinion, on TV.

So when a bombing occurs, and it involves someone connected with Chechnya rather than a home-grown fool, it sets off a chain of assumptions - that he thinks his job requires him to report/reinforce:

    -  The nation is traumatized and unsafe
    -  I feel traumatized and unsafe, because my job is to be a reflection of the public
    -  The government failed to keep us safe
    -  It failed to keep us safe because we don't have the right balance between security and personal liberty.
    -  We need to get rid of more rights in order to be safe.

It's lazy, but it reflects his understanding of his job and reflects the kind of media and thinking that got him where he is now.  He's always been about parroting back to the public what a narrower group of Washington insider types feel is conventional wisdom.  He's never reported anything original or true in his life.

“If the misery of the poor be caused not by the laws of nature, but by our institutions, great is our sin.” Charles Darwin
