    If HP pisses off their shareholders, they will just sell. Anyway, HP's CEO salary is between HP and its shareholders.

    But nonprofits are another thing entirely. Like government, they have an ethical responsibility to their donors to use their donation funds as frugally as possible. That being said, you need good people and you need to pay them some reasonable fraction of what they would make in a corporation, but the ethical responsibility overrides everything, especially to disclose to donors details like how much money is actually going to nonprofit purposes.
