  •  The CIA security team that was sent... (9+ / 0-)

...could have handled that and that may have been part of the reason it was sent. These special forces guys were in Libya, ironically, to check out security arrangements at the embassy in Tripoli. (This was being done throughout North Africa and the Middle East.) That's a routine job that certainly didn't require more than sidearms.

Don't tell me what you believe, show me what you do and I will tell you what you believe.

Contrary to what is shown in the movies, have AT LEAST several hours of planning and usually more.  I think the Bin Laden raid guys trained for two weeks.  Ditto for the failed rescue of the Iranian embassy hostages.  The military has millions of dollars invested in the training of these guys so the mission has to be both well planned and worth the risk to send them in.   A terrorist attack on a consulate which even, had they taken off instantly, they would not have arrived on time,  in my eyes does not constitute a critical mission.  Also as meteor blades points out, the soldiers weren't even equipped with the proper gear for an assault.  But, the Republicans probed deep enough and found a mid level guy to complain about the administration so they won.
