    i'm not sure how scrambling fighter jets would have helped at all, absent clear intelligence as to potential targets, which was hardly forthcoming. I suppose they could have strafed the crowd with cannon, probably killing a bunch of innocent civilians in the process, which would hardly have endeared the locals to us.

    then there is the small matter of ground forces. let's assume, for the sake of argument, that the detachment in question had been fully combat-ready, and immediately hopped aboard the transport and flown directly to the embassy compound. then what? unless they'd carried a light mortar with them, and had the intelligence available to properly target it, they still wouldn't have been able to avoid the deaths caused by the mortar fire. this was 4 guys, not a full combat platoon. at best, they would have had some smoke and fragmentation grenades, along with light infantry weapons, so they would have been just as useless as the cia guys were, against the mortar attack.
