When he was speaker, he slashed Congressional committee staffs, and eliminated the Office of Technology Assessment and the Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations.

Some turnover was always inevitable when parties swapped control of the House and Senate, but there was still a core of dedicated people on hand to provide Congress with sound advice and maintain institutional memory - which of course was a problem for Gingrich and the Republicans. "Facts are stupid things", especially when they contradict the ideological agenda of the day.

Net result, the institutional IQ of Congress has been lobotomized ever since, and Republicans remain intent on killing any messenger who seeks to tell them anything they don't want to hear. Tea party whack jobs are even worse.

So, the news that Congressional staffs are being filled out by grifters, industry reps, etc. etc. is no big surprise. The Republican approach to government is that of the looter, and these people are their shock troops.

"No special skill, no standard attitude, no technology, and no organization - no matter how valuable - can safely replace thought itself."
