    …European Beech is a very desirable wood to use in making work benches—straight, tight grain, very hard. While good for any sort of workbench, many woodworkers lust for a "European style" bench characterized by a front vise and a tail vise, along with rows of holes for "dogs" (used to secure flat stock), and a tool tray at the rear. This is an image of a commercial version (Ulmia):

      teacher in the equivalent of middle school, allowed me to take extra geography instead of woodwork, because I was SO very good at converting stock lengths of wood into piles of shavings....and nothing else!! :)
