  •  Have a concern regarding one of (8+ / 0-)

the applicants which expands to NN13 filming & photography in general.

"DocFilm" states he is intending to do a documentary film about NN13 and shop it to PBS.  Even if he does not get a scholarship and attends NN13 on his own, can he do this?

Last year at NN12, there were several incidents where people were filmed or feared such. We lost (apparently) several important voices here, due to these situations.   For some, anonymity on DK is VERY important.

Will there be filming, other than of presenters at 'head tables', talks, panels, etc?  I'm not talking about pics of unnamed backsides (or front sides) packing care boxes or general milling around. (However some may feel stalked.)  But rather situations which people feel uncomfortable being photographed.

As part of the registration, does one essentially sign a photo release?

    •  that's an excellent point (8+ / 0-)

I used to work as a production assistant on low budget indies and also on some documentaries. we were scrupulous about getting signed releases from everyone.

I totally get your concern here.

    •  I should add, we are not planning (6+ / 0-)

to attend NN13.  We had considered it, but then a family member decided to have a wedding, here in the East too close to the time.  Plus I've got some major dental work scheduled right afterwards, plus squeezing in a trip to Pacific NW.  No money or time for an additional trip.

Just remember the fall out from last year and seeing the application reminded me of the situation.

Hi PinHole - We're not aware of any requests to officially shoot a documentary at NN this year. But if such a thing were to happen the filmmakers would at the very least need to talk with us and then they'd need to secure releases. For anything that's part of a commercial enterprise these kinds of releases are required, and would certainly be checked in the case of a credible outlet like PBS.

In terms of photos, the photographers who are part of our team generally try to ask you for permission to take your photo, but this may not happen in all cases. But they don't carry releases with them and the photos are only for our own purposes, they aren't part of any commercial works.

Beyond that, the event is definitely not in any way private. There are upwards of 250+ credentialed members of the traditional media there each year. There have been plenty of times they've written about something I would have preferred they didn't. And then of course most attendees have some sort of platform whether that's blogging at places like DK or simply posting to various social media outlets.

The only thing we can control with respect to anonymity if you attend is you aren't required to use your real name on your badge, we only require it for payment. And we never provide a list of our attendees to anyone.

Finally, if someone approaches any volunteer or staff member with specific concerns we'll do our best to address them given the conditions I described above. But my best advice is don't hesitate to say something if you don't want to be filmed or photographed, but please do it nicely and tactfully.

Perhaps someone should make 'DocFilm' aware of them.

As you said Raven, there will undoubtedly be those who come with less than honorable intentions.  The J O'Keefe want-ta-bes.

The May 6th New York">New York">New York magazine has an article about him.  He's going around NJ holding seminars (financed by the Kochs) about how to turn yourself into a filmmaker for "the truth."   Of course, the majority who show up aren't on Twitter, Facebook, etc.  He describes himself as being "falsely accused."

Above should be just one New York.  I'm having trouble with the linkage, sorry.
