  •  The religious views have relevance. (8+ / 0-)

The Air Force in particular has a real problem with Christian Dominionists who have a track record of not only doing their religious stuff at work, but also protect or exclude other members of the military based on their participation or non-participation in their religious activities.

That's a part of the corruption at play here.

    •  That definitely is a real problem (0+ / 0-)

      and should be addressed.

I'm not sure it's connected.  Sexual harassment and assaults, and coverups thereof, are by no means particular to the religious.

      •  The brand of Christianity - if it can be (4+ / 0-)

called that - is militaristic and paternalistic.  For a lot of these guys it is unacceptable to have women serving in the military at all.  Intimidating and abusing the female service personnel is not outside of the realm of that culture. But also even if there is no active resentment towards women on the part of commanders, in some instances all someone who is a predator needs to do to avoid scrutiny is to show up at the prayer groups and be a part of that insider club.

        •  That's a good point -- I hadn't thought of that. (0+ / 0-)

The religious grouping being another way of cementing the us-against-them brotherhood.  Yeah.  :/

          •  The trend has been pretty well documented (0+ / 0-)

by a number of folks around here who specialize in stories about the fundamentalist movement in America and in our military - you should read diarists called Frederick Clarkson and troutfishing or troutfish (can't remember the name exactly).

The Air Force's high profile problems with sexual assault go all the way back to the 90's - and the issues created by the fundamentalist movement inside that organization has been subject to scrutiny for at least a decade.

    •  Indeed. (2+ / 0-)

And the more fundamentalist types tend to have a blame the victim mentality when it comes to rape.

The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy... the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.
