    the late 1960's.  The University of Chicago  -- in many ways an admirable institution-- wanted to expand south of 59th St which was effectively a border with the neighboring area -- largely Afro-American.  Hyde Park in those days ( the surroundings of the University) was comparatively integrated -- a rarity at that time in Chi-town, where nations and races kept largely to themselves.
