  •  Several answers and a question (0+ / 0-)

    1) It appears that various EU and other sources have samples and reports from medical professionals.  From what I have heard, it is fairly conclusive that someone used chemical weapons.

    2) Who used them is a very important question.  It seems most likely that the Assad regime did, simply because they are the ones who have them.  Did rebels get them?  It is a possibility of course, which gives pause.

    3) Chemical weapon use is a serious breach of the laws of war and international law.  So, there are really two questions:

    a) If a government is killing civilians with banned weapons, should those with the wherewithal to be able to do something actually do so?  Put another way, when we said "never again" after the holocaust, but sat on our hands in Bosnia and Rwanda, can the US honestly claim any moral authority, now that it is clear that Americans respond to reports of atrocities with a shrug and a "what's in it for me, huh?"

    b) If we don't think that trying to stand up for democracy elsewhere is worth anything, then how can "progressives" in the US really have a case that defending democratic principles at home has any real basis?  Shouldn't we instead just laud Wall Street for buying Congress as the ultimate in self interested policy approach?

Touch all that arises with a spirit of compassion
