Hewlett Packard Workstations are in a sweet spot when it comes used PCs. Unlike Dell, HP tends to use standard parts (mostly) so upgrading the hardware is fairly straightforward. Perhaps Dell has changed their behavior, but be aware.

The HP XW#### series and Z### series are worth looking at on ebay. You're probably safer buying from a seller that has more than one of the same used model available. Why? Because bulk sales suggest that the workstation is being sold because a giant corporation is replacing the machines on an arbitrary schedule, rather than because than because the machine's gone bad. If you get a corporate machine with an installed OS, you'll probably want to trash it and start from scratch. (Corporate IT people have the ultimate nanny-state mentality - they sort of have to). Send me a message if you find one or two you'd like an opinion on.

that I'm quite happy with although I can't such anything good about HP's customer service. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that people should avoid their "SmartFriend" service altogether. They actually charge you regardless of whether they fix your problem although they lead you to believe that you will only be charged if they solve your problem.

I had to fight them for several days in order to obtain a refund after they claimed that all they had to do was diagnose my problem.

...out of warranty. And the "friends and knowledgeable strangers" help desk doesn't usually charge. Fortunately, the HP hardware is pretty beefy. (Not Panasonic Toughbook beefy, but that's a whole 'nother world.)

    •  eBay is rigged (0+ / 0-)

Having bids appear on a page that has been dormant prior to my opening it is enough to let me know it isn't an actual auction.

The bulk computer sales are mostly "Buy it Now" (or "Buy it Now or Best Offer") instead of auction format. And the bulk sellers will often offer single PCs in addition to selling lots of 50, or lots of 5.

The whole auction thing can easily be avoided on eBay which does have its uses. Where else are you gonna find 10 identical servers for sale?
