But pulling all the usb's and accessory plugs does nothing.

I'm not at the unit at the moment so further examination will have to wait.

    •  OK, power and screen check out, HD probably ok (0+ / 0-)

It might be the hard drive cable or port. You could try plugging the cable into a different port, or swapping the cable if you can find another one. Might be able to take the one from the cd/dvd drive and put it on the hard drive.

      •  Are these internal connections? (0+ / 0-)

I haven't opened the case except to clean the fan. Are there additional terminals?

        •  This would be inside (1+ / 0-)

Hard drive is probably 4x6 inches, so follow the connection from the hard drive to the motherboard. There are usually multiple places to plug the cable in on the motherboard. The hard drive will also have a power plug that goes to the power supply, but you want the one that goes to the motherboard.

First, just make sure the plugs aren't loose. Vibrations can loosen them and cause problems. Plug in tight and see if it boots properly.

Second, the CD drive may have the same type cable. Unplug the CD cable and boot to see if that is the problem. Do this even if the cable is a different type, just to rule out this drive.

Third, take the CD cable and swap it for the hard drive cable. Boot and check.

Fourth, plug the hard drive into a different similar looking port on the motherboard. Boot and check.

These plugs often have a latch that you need to push to unplug from the socket, and they have to face the correct direction. Other than that, don't force anything and it is unlikely that you screw anything up.

And local. I'll just give my two useless towers to him to see if something can be done.

Helped my kid fix her computer via text messaging, and while it worked, it was not the smoothest process.
