  •  That's why I'm against space tourism (3+ / 0-)

Liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen is good, though, so long as it was manufactured using renewable energy.

    •  Is the use of renewable energy even thinkable? (0+ / 0-)

Would be glad to know if it has been used.

My thought was that, like con trails, satellite launches must introduce extra heat into the atmosphere, something that I understand, from George Monbiot, to be a huge problem.

given that there just won't be that many flights, compared to airliners. Work is apparently still ongoing on the impact of airplane contrails, which both reflect the sun's energy back to space (cooling) and back toward the ground (warming), like any similar cloud. If I'm remembering correctly, the warming effect is stronger, but I'm not sure by how much.

Some researchers who compared temperatures in North America in the three days after 9/11, when there weren't planes flying, to other similar days concluded that the difference between daytime high and nighttime low temperatures is reduced by contrails (reflected energy, per above). They didn't determine any overall warming effect, though.

are more properly an "exhaust plume" rather than a contrail. "Contrail" is short for "condensation trail," what happens when the water in jet engine exhaust freezes. There's lots more at Contrail Science.
