  •  Obama has avoided being dragged in (1+ / 0-)

The whitehouse released a carefully worded statement on the possibility of Syrian CW use that the media failed to understand. They did an assessment on the physiological samples (blood) that had been analyzed. They did not feel the results met their "standard of evidence" and that there were questions about "chain of custody". In a US court trial that evidence would be thrown out.

The Bush administration would have accepted the samples as enough to convict or go to war. They saw everything in black or white. Obama sees the shades of grey and realizes that the evidence has to be rock solid before he will order US lives be put at risk.

I'm guessing that we are monitoring the Syrian CW storage sites pretty closely and have a good idea of who and what is coming and going.

to war thru the UN like they used to, especially with Russia and China finally drawing a line. He's tried going thru the UN a couple times.  And now with the UN itself (although backtracked) coming out and saying the "rebels" used chem weapons, that makes it even harder.  Enter Israel, which has kept relatively quiet up til now.   I don't think he's avoiding being dragged in, he just hasn't been able set the stage for justification.  Not that the US hasn't been involved from the beginning.

"I'm an antiwar propagandist as accused by democrats. Not even republicans have called me that."

It would be a lot easier for us to go in with everyone's blessing and destroy the stockpiles of binary and mixed agent that Syria has and then get out. We don't want our guys going in and attempting to decon/destroy agent in a hostile environment.
Bottom line is either the US or the OPCW will have to get rid of that stuff.
