Republicans by some measures are as little as 25% of the electorate, but they continue to dominate any constituency that at least tilts red, even with the most patently offensive candidates like Sanford. Of course this is amplified in heavily white districts in the South.
I think this country is polarized beyond repair, and that doesn't bode well for Democrats in the House and state legislatures, since the GOP dominated the drawing of districts following the 2010 Census. Obama hate carries the day in red districts (see Sanford and DesJarlais), no matter the quality of the Dem and GOP candidates. Democrats need an identity beyond Obama if they want to win a majority in the House. I don't think that can happen until Obama leaves office.
