    Our unit is loosing money which is an elephant nobody talks about in public but it has gotten the attention of management.  Two weeks ago I came across a memo that was a plan to deal with the issue.  It had been dumped in the recycle bin without being shredded and was laying on top when I went to dump my can.  This is a mid management plan and makes no sense to me.  It will in fact cost more money because the propose to let the part time people go and replace us with full time people who will receive full benefits.  Duh! So I suspect when the financial office goes over it they will come up with a new plan.  However cuts are coming and I expect to be one until told differently.  Of course they don't know I know which is an interesting situation.

    In my father's day and union job, laid-off meant that you would be recalled in order of seniority if and when business conditions picked up.  They also used the term "temporary lay-off" for what we now call a furlough.  The work week would be cut to 3 or 4 days and he could collect unemployment for the days off.  He never minded those especially in the summer when he was making a huge garden anyway.  

    Now it seems that lay-off means fired without cause but in WA State you are employed "at will" unless you have a written contract.  That means that they can always let you go with or without cause.  If they can find a cause then they don't have to pay your unemployment though.  Now as we all know anyone can "find" a cause when they really want to.  I have a lot of latitude in my job as to how to interpret certain "rules" which normally works great for them. However in a time like this it sucks for me because every action I take is subject to question when it's convenient.  

    I have a copy of the memo and plan to use it in my unemployment benefits hearing if they get all chicken shit and try to let me go for cause.  I hope it doesn't come to that.  They have been good people to work for and I hope they do the right thing.  Otherwise I can show that the "cause" is trumped up to support a previously decided plan to downsize.

    I guess I can say that I that I've already been impacted because my mental state has changed and my morale is certainly not what it once was.

      mr.uintas was just plain fired with the claim that he was incompetent at the job he'd been doing for 21 years there, over 30 years total. The people at unemployment just laughed and gave him his benefits.

      That was before the recession, and mr.u was 57. It took awhile but he did get a new job that he loves. I have no idea is unemployment would be as understanding now, times are much tougher.
