  •  Well.... (9+ / 0-)

I remember a job I had when I was 19, in a huge discount dept. store (now defunct)....I had just started, and was the very lowest of the low on the totem pole (and don't think for a mille-second the much older ladies didn't take total advantage of the 'new kid' with all the 'special' jobs they gave me).
I went home for lunch and never went back.  Didn't think about it at all.  I called and said something like 'you can take the job and shove it' to one of the delightful women who had made my life at the job so, oh I dunno, so memorable.  At least I called....ran into someone else later who had done the same thing (they'd been given the 'royal treatment' by these same delightful women) and they didn't bother to call....just left in the middle of the shift.
That was the only time I ever did that.  It really WAS that bad.

    •  During college I (8+ / 0-)

picked up a job working for an inventory company.  It was fairly simple but tedious.  My first shift was 6 hours at a pharmacy with a team of folks.  All shift I noticed that every time I looked up everyone else - including the supervisor were just standing around leaning on things while I was busting my hump.  I did not return for the second shift.  Never collected any pay - just chalked it up to experience.

Yup....been there, done that, and had the same co-workers (different job, different people, different names....same attitude).

      •  Worked at a shoe factory (8+ / 0-)

It wasn't the scut jobs where you never mad piece rate, lack of air conditioning, the 20 minute lunch break, or even the malodorous cafeteria, it was the supervisors who followed you into the bathroom during the afternoon break to make sure you weren't smoking or socialising.
One day the sun was shining, the mountain laurel was in bloom, and three of us took off for a picnic and never came back. I did work the rest of the summer, but it was as a counsellor at a Girl Scout camp.
When I think of manufacturing that has been offshored, I know some good union jobs have left, but there were also a lot of pissant non-union factories where people were rode hard so the owner could own a Jaguar V-12. That misery has been offshored out of sight as well. Something to remember when you put on your shoes.

        •  Best day I ever had as a door-to-door salesman (0+ / 0-)

was the day I drove to Muir Woods and spent the afternoon wandering amongst the redwoods.  It was a Multi-Level-Marketing gig where the supervisors were people trying to put together a team of salesmen who would be giving them a cut of their sales while they were trying to put together their own team to give them a cut, etc.

The supervisor took a couple of us "underperforming" people out and he chose the very same businesses to walk into that we had, and was similarly unable to sell anything.  I think I was there about three days.
