  •  This.. this is part of the reason we decided to (4+ / 0-)

homeschool our autistic son. Not that he can't pass the FCAT, he always did. But at what price? He'd come home every day angry and in melt down, frustrated because his routine was completely altered, the pressure of the tests because they tell them if they don't pass they flunk the school year no matter what their grades are. And for what? All they were able to tell me at the last IEP meeting was that he always passed it, not what the score actually MEANT so far as his progress went. It never applied at all to his IEP goals or improved his education. All it ever did was cause a major behavioral shift into the negative, set him back weeks of school work before they could get him to focus again, and weeks of horrid screaming, kicking, biting, destructive fits at home. When other things fell into place to allow us to home school and to encourage us to home school (them wanting to give him no supports in middle school for example), this was just one more incentive to keep him home. No more FCAT. I won't expose my children to this again. My daughter never went, my son never went back.
