  •  to be honest it is annoying when the vast (6+ / 0-)

majority speak English and most time spent with automated systems and their heavily scripted human counterparts is just about the most miserable part of any day.. it should assume English and have you dial 1 for Spanish.

The default for technology should be the most work for the least people. Like in the job market today.

But seriously, good design would be "If you prefer a language other than English, press 1 now. Otherwise stay on the line." And the other languages should include Chinese, French, German ... it's not as if larger firms don't have plentiful multi-lingual persons looking for employment and capable of handling a phone and a computer in this round world.

Here in Vermont there are far more French speakers than Spanish. When the banks were locally owned the cash machines reflected that. Now they've been bought up by banks from elsewhere, and Spanish instead of French is the second choice, despite that it's useful to far fewer people here.

Pretending that English and Spanish constitute a full menu of language options is silly.

say "press 1 for english." English is assumed and the say, in spanish, to "press 2 for spanish." Guess that makes this diary's point a rather moot, eh?

Ds see human suffering and wonder what they can do to relieve it. Rs see human suffering and wonder how they can profit from it.

More user friendly to do it the way most systems do now...assume one language and press a key for others.

But I doubt most conservatives are design mavens. For them it's all about "freedom" involving something stupid, like buying energy wasting light bulbs. While freedom to vote is not even on their radar.

...English, it makes me feel privileged as an English speaker.

I mean, think about it. Who else gets to press "1" for their favorite language?
