the Faith' in his title to 'Defender of the Faiths'. Good idea  but it didn't get through.

The title is a Papal one granted to Henry VIII before the divorce and after Henry wrote a learned defence of Catholicism against the Reformation. British monarchs since have used the title "Fidelis Defensor"  If you look at sterling coin you will see one side has the monarch's head with at least the initial letters of the Latin "Dei Gratia, Rex (Regina), Fidelis Defensor" which is usually translated as "by the grace of God, King (Queen), Defender of the Faith."

Charles (who it is thought probably will use the regnant name of George VII) simply wants to drop the "the" from "the Faith". This is a perfectly acceptable if novel translation. Like the name he will be known as, this is a decision to be made at the appropriate time, i.e. when he becomes King on the death of his mother.

Incidentally, that is literally the case - succession is immediate and does not require a coronation. The formal announcement of Elizabeth's death will (almost certainly) end "The Queen is dead, long live the King". The Succession to the Crown Act 2013 abolished primogeniture but given the line goes from Charles to William and only then to Kate's bump regardless of sex, the next monarch being male is a reasonable assumption.

We will work, we will play, we will laugh, we will live. We will not waste one moment, nor sacrifice one bit of our freedom, because of fear.

Princess Diana was pregnant for the first time, but it didn't get done before William's birth and he was a boy anyway, so it was moot.

The reigning queens that Britain has had, Elizabeth I, Victoria, and Elizabeth II have all been exceptionally good monarchs, so I can see why the British would want to promote having more queens.

          •  Yeah, I think so too. (0+ / 0-)

Elizabeth Tudor being my favorite, because she came in so disadvantaged and made a good go of it anyway.
