I was rather stunned when I read the comments of your last diary about this. It's saddening that it has to be explained why zero-tolerance is bullshit AND unevenly applied (I'll also give some benefit of the doubt re those things perhaps being subconscious).

I've seen this first hand in my lily-white family. I have a nephew who is very troubled and violent and he's not yet been kicked out of school. The Hispanic kids that show the same or less violence? Gone after the first incident.

On the other hand, my niece is The Student. Advanced in everything, in gifted classes, LOVES school. Just last night she called me to talk about science! How effing cool is that? Here I was having an in depth conversation about erosion and anthropology with a third-grader, and when she had to get off the phone she asked me to call her tonight so we could continue talking about it.

I was stoked. I want her to keep that love of and fascination with science. It sucks to think that she's really not going to get a whole lot more out of it in her high school years (incidentally, also the time I quit paying attention because it got incredibly boring).

We need to foster that sense of awe in children when they have it.

And no amount of talk will convince me that if it was my lily-white, blue-eyed niece (who is also of Hispanic descent but you don't by looking at her), that she would have suffered the same consequences as Wilmot did. No fucking way. She would have gotten a stern talking to followed by offers of more supervised experiments.

Which is what should have happened here.

    P.S. I am not a crackpot.
