    It's surprising that it remains obscure. This seems a really important story to our history. It has all the elements to make it a pivotal moment.

    I would have been 10 then and I remember that was about the time I was becoming acutely aware of my father's hatred of "faggots." Whenever a news story would air about gay people, my dad would use that word a lot, along with the word "fucking." It wasn't until after I married Brian that he admitted how ashamed he is today of how he used to be. To use him as a measure of progress, yes, we have come a long way.
