    •  Will the Bishops be able to resist threatening (6+ / 0-)

them with a communion ban or even excommunication if they decide the wrong way?

      •  Will they be able to resist doing that (3+ / 0-)

to every supporter of same-sex marriage everywhere? Some Bishops have already said people who support marriage equality should not receive communion, I think.

I resent that. I demand snark, and overly so -- Markos Moulitsas.

        •  Years ago in Michigan (6+ / 0-)

Then Governor Blanchard, a Democrat, picked a Catholic nun, Sr. Agnes Mary Mansour to head the Michigan Department of Social Services.

She was forced to resign from her order and was excommunicated for her refusal to speak out against abortion.
If I am remembering this correctly, as it was the 1980s, Sr. Mansour believed that as long as wealthy women could legally obtain abortions that poorer women should also be able to have them, those on government assistance.
She promised to uphold the law and reminded citizens of the separation of church and state.

I seem to recall there was quite the hoopla over that back then, but the majority of people were supportive of the former-nun and sympathized with her for being excommunicated.
She still attended daily mass but did not receive communion or maybe she left before communion was served, I can't remember how that worked back then.

I think if Sr. Mansour were alive today and under similar circumstances that her life would most likely be threatened by those filled with hate.
          Times sure have changed.

When did the Republican Party get so mean and hate-filled and violent?
It wasn't like that back then.
Was it when the evangelicals joined the GOP?
Was it the surge of popularity of Rush Limbaugh?
FOX didn't exist back then, or if they did, they weren't like today at all.
I'm trying to remember when it changed so drastically.

Am fairly certain most of them will put their religious beliefs above the law, but not sure about Justice Sotomayor.

I think Kennedy might not be able to put his religion above civil law because of precedents he himself has set.
