My girlfriend at a time was a vet in the early 90s. The first Gulf War. She was raped time and time again by her fellow soldiers. I tried hard to understand. A level of empathy. But to be honest it was more than I could understand. I should have been a better person, but alas I could not. A women I miss, but alas not something I could figure out how to deal with.

was the best thing you could do for her. My dad never understood how being raped by her father from 9 -14 had affected Mom. In that era there was very little understanding of this. He's a very bright guy and might well have done better with the empathy if not for whatever mental/emotional barriers he had.

One of my sisters and I had similar problems with husbands who couldn't be honest with themselves let alone us. You just can't pretend in marriage or long term relationships.

You were very good to her.
