  •  The marriage amendment backfired (11+ / 0-)

There were stories (including an interview on WCCO with GOP guy Michael Brodkorb) that said the MN Republicans wanted an issue that would bring out their base (and possibly defeat Amy Klobuchar). So the voters were asked to vote on the one-man-one-woman amendment.

But it brought out the wrong base -- it energized pro-equality voters. The amendment failed and both the house and senate switched from GOP to Dem. And because the amendment failed, it gave energy to the people who want marriage-equality.

    I couldn't be happier.

was amazing to be a part of; I have never felt/witnessed anything like it.
Part of what energized me was that the GOP was elected on a platform of jobs, jobs, jobs-- but when they got into office all they did was shut down the government (costing the state millions) and put 2 cynical, mean-spirited initiatives on the next ballot: the gay marriage amendment, and voter ID. It made me angry that they were wasting time on such hurtful things.
I'm still a little bitter that all that beautiful people energy had to be spent on stopping bad things instead of promoting good things-- but the fact that it was then channeled into forward momentum on marriage rights is currently outweighing the bitterness!
