It's completely ridiculous for a US Senator to say, and it deserves mocking

But a lot of the people making the comments (you can read the comments yourself) are going on about how amazing Mexico is compared to the US

    •  That's because Mexico IS amazing in many (5+ / 0-)

ways when compared to the US. The reverse is also true.

Conveniently you mentioned the high murder rate (without a link) in Juarez without mentioning the cause of it. Luckily, most people on this site (I'd like to think) know that as a result of the US decades long charade known as the "War on drugs" Mexican cartels battle each other for control of the very lucrative product pipelines into the US.

      •  That's irrelevant, unfortunately (0+ / 0-)

The US has hurt a lot of nation states with flawed policies

        Just look at Iraq

Yet, how would you act if someone said:

"Well Iraq is a great place to live! Gas is cheap! No party controlled by strict Christians! Yeah sure we have problems, but that is only because of the US so it doesn't matter...for some reason!"

        It's silly

I can't believe someone would seriously try to compare the US and Mexico

Look at how many english-speaking science graduates in Mexico try to immigrate to the United States, now look at how many spanish-speaking science graduates in the United States try to immigrate to Mexico

        •  I applaud the blatancy of your chauvinsim. (0+ / 0-)

Where I lived in Mexico had lower crime rates than where I live here in the U.S.

I can compare both because I've lived in both.

I know Mexico beyond the cartoon characterizing of U.S. chauvanists. I hope you will one day.

          •  Wow (0+ / 0-)

The resort towns and best locations in Mexico may be better than the worst neighborhoods in a nation of over 300 million people

Sounds like a winning argument, I have no idea why spanish speaking science graduates aren't flooding into Mexico while the english speaking science graduates of Mexico aren't staying put in their clearly much more secure and stable country

Look at the NYTimes slandering Mexico, you should write them an angry letter about how it is all a conspiracy and they are just making things up:

Six years into a mostly military assault on drug cartels, impunity across much of Mexico has worsened, and justice is harder to find. Criminals in Mexico are less likely to be punished now than even just a few years ago, say current and former government officials and experts who have studied Mexico’s ailing judiciary, because the authorities have been overwhelmed by increases in violent crime while corruption, fear and incompetence have continued to keep the justice system weak.

Many areas now veer toward lawlessness: in 14 of Mexico’s 31 states, the chance of a crime’s leading to trial and sentencing was less than 1 percent in 2010, according to government figures analyzed by a Mexican research institute known as Cidac. And since then, experts say, attempts at reform have stalled as crime and impunity have become cozy partners.
