  •  GOP's blind arrogance: that US still attracts all. (0+ / 0-)

One eye-opening lesson from spending a lot of time abroad the past few years is encountering so many people who do not want to move to or even visit the USA. (Even poor Filipinos, Indians, Pakistanis, Egyptians, as well as wealthy Gulf Arabs.)

This compares dramatically with 30 years ago, when almost everyone I met overseas expressed some interest in at least a visit. Now, I meet a lot of people who emphatically do not want to come here.

The reasons given vary -- border hassles, crime, lack of jobs, better opportunities elsewhere, stupidity, arrogance, anti-foreigner biases, poor infrastructure (we rank 16th for broadband, behind Portugal; many of our roads, bridges, rail, ports, airports, schools, and public buildings have fallen below world-class standards), etc.

Perhaps this is a 'silver lining' for anti-government, anti-immigrant GOP xenophobes, perhaps even a deliberate strategy? But it's not a path I want to follow, nor do most Americans if presented with the facts.

I agree that the long-term solution to the 'immigration problem' is to help economically develop Mexico, so perhaps there is some common ground. But I haven't seen a smidgeon of evidence that the GOP is willing to actually do anything about this, they're all about building fences and deporting people.
