The gap between the voter turnout reported by the Census Bureau and the actual national vote tallied by election officials widened in 2012.

According to the Census Bureau’s 2012 Current Population Survey November Supplement on Voting and Registration, an estimated 133 million U.S. citizens voted in 2012. That estimate is higher—by 4 million votes—than the national tally of 129 million votes cast for president.

The gap in reported votes and the actual vote tally is the widest since 2000 (when the gap was 5.4 million votes) and marks the first widening of the gap since 1984.

with themselves for the most part.  They aren't tuned in to the news or politics as a rule.  More of them are conservative and influenced by their parents than you realize, and only come to think independently in their later twenties as they get out into a wider world view.

I teach at a university in WV and I know for sure most of them don't think about Benghazi or the Tea Party.  They aren't procoal but they can't see how their vote matters here-  they mostly want to leave the state or get one of the few good jobs if they can, to be close to family.

My sample is limited to smarter, more motivated kids.  The others are wasting time in dead end minimum wage jobs, using drugs and runnin around with life drama that thrives here.  And little will make a difference, except opening a few more free rehab places to help wean some off their addictions.

...the young people I know are no more preoccupied with themselves than any generation of young people has been.  Indeed, the ones I know are dramatically more aware of what lies beyond their immediate circle and surroundings (probably because more able to access it through the Internet) than any such demographic I've seen since the 1960s.  Your comment dismisses them, and then people here wonder why the young don't turn up.
