  •  I'm sorry you had such a disappointing experience. (5+ / 0-)

It could be that in the era of social media, the "specialness" being invited to a prof's house is not understood within the context that you experienced it as a child.

It could be that mixing class content with social space is awkward for students and they don't know how to negotiate it.

It could be that the difference in age/status (academically-speaking, but maybe also socially) is too much for them to overcome without more than a semester's worth of experience with you.

I generally don't even have coffee with students let alone invite them to my home. They intrude into my private space via email - not intentionally, but through asynchronous communication that is our world, and the online lives that many of us choose to live that brings student communication into the day even on the weekend.

Heck, I don't even socialize with my colleagues outside of work.

That having been said, I have had profs, both when I was a grad and undergrad, who brought me as part of a classroom experience into their homes and I always enjoyed and valued that opportunity.

    •  I agree, there is a different "feel" these days. . (4+ / 0-)

I am not saying that it was better then or now - just "different."

In college in 1990, I could not get home for Thanksgiving, so I practically invited myself over to my advisor's place, I brought a floral arrangement for his wife and a six pack of micro brew for him and we had fun. . .

can't see it happening today though.

Blessed are the peacemakers, the poor, the meek and the sick. Message to Repug Fundies: "DO you really wonder "what would Jesus do?" I didn't think so.
