  •  Burg Hohenzollern is in the next town down (7+ / 0-)

the road from me. It's quite impressive, but is actually the third iteration of the original, built only between 1846 and 1867, and meant as a memorial, not a residence. As a result, it has no heat. I know that very well because I went up there for the first time last winter, when my cousin from Canada was visiting. Definitely not going to repeat that mistake: the place was effin' freezing, brrrrrrr! I ended up with a nasty flu, lol. It's very popular for weddings around here, and has a pretty nice restaurant, which I've only heard about, never been. But it's definitely worth a tour, lots of really interesting things to see, and magnificent interior, of course.

... no member of the Hohenzollern family took residence in this third castle until 1945, when it became home to the last Prussian Crown Prince Wilhelm who is buried there with his wife, Crown Princess Cecilie.
No kidding! I don't remember if the tour guide mentioned how they heated, I was too busy trying not to get frostbite.

Sorry for this off-topic anecdote, but I am already so thoroughly disgusted with the next crop of presidential hopefuls from the Republican party, I'm about all out of outrage. The last group almost did me in. In fact, I haven't been around an awful lot lately in general, because the state of our country just makes me heartsick and terribly sad. I've been wanting to come back for some time, but I don't know if I could, after all these years as an expat.

BTW, a little more info on Hohenzell is here
