    the fertile mind of Major Frank Halford was more or less forced into being, because the huge mountain of surplus Renault V-8 aero engines from WW1 had finally run out. The Aircraft Disposal Company (ADC) literally used one bank of cylinders from the Renault V-8 to create a 4-cylinder Cirrus engine producing 90 hp .

    So, what was needed was a four-cylinder (preferably, inverted to improve the pilot's view) in the range 100 - 130 hp - say hello to the DH Gipsy!!
