    Having been both a scholar and a, er, "political persuader" aka somebody who creates political messaging, or, in impolite terms, a propagandist, I know the difference between the two things.

    Even though I always tried to keep my propaganda/political messaging as truthful as possible, both because I like it better that way and because I think it works better that way, there's a difference between trying to achieve a particular political goal and trying to ascertain the truth.  Under good conditions, the political and the academic can walk side by side on the road to an achievable and desirable goal. But they're never the same thing.
