Sad to see Maher saying this.  Good for Greenwald calling him on it.

If the US was a muslim majority country and all of the positions of power were filled with muslims and there were a bunch of poor christian majority countries around the world that had natural resources that the US wanted, things would be just as they are just with the god teams swapped.   When you are powerless and being oppressed, you resort to radical measures.  Religion just gives powerless people some feeling of belonging to something powerful.  Killing with drones while saying God Bless America is considered righteous and not violent in any way.  Killing with suicide bombs is violent and horrible and un-American.

Being oppressed and terrorized turns people into radicals. Just as maher pointed out in his piece on wealth inequality where he did such a great job on that issue.  Violence and wealth inequality go hand and hand.  Oppression and violence also go hand in hand.

    •  Muslims have never oppressed and terrorized... (5+ / 0-)

...their own people? Really? At least, for what it's worth Judaism and Christianity have had reformations where the killing and genocide of others is no longer preached by the mainstream versions of these religions. Many strong Islamist sects which run their theocracies teach that such immoral aspects are holy and supported by the faith.

None of the above is to take away from your point that tacit approval of the same is often allowed through other means by Christianity, Judaism here in the west.

Isn't it funny that some of the most peaceful, flourishing, and successful nations on Earth are the secular, mostly non-god believing nations in Europe, Australia and elsewhere?

      •  Yeah and the Nazi motto: (0+ / 0-)

"Gott Mitt Uns" was just a reference to mittens. /snark

At least get your history of Europe right.

        It's *Gandhi*, not Ghandi

        •  I mentioned today's Europe not the historical (0+ / 0-)

Since you bring up historical Europe, bobtmn said it well a few comments above

Hitlers crimes in the name of religion may have something to do with why Europe has become so secular.   Good for them for recognizing how religion became such a disaster.
