The protest was against HUAC (House Un American Activities Committee). The McCarthy witch hunts went after  the "Red Scare,"  "Communists." McCarthy's committee destroyed many lives and careers.

I don't remember the exact year, but it was in the 1950s.  The police were very brutal, dragged people down the marble stairs and drenched them with fire hoses.  Most of the protesters you see in those pictures were students and faculty at UCB and San Francisco State University.

And the last part of the MoI tape is footage of bomb tests in the Pacific which dosed the SF Bay Area  with radioactivity at that same time.  Friends of mine from the Physics Department at UCB went around taking geiger counter measurements on cars parked in Berkeley.

These protesters were mainly young students who very much believed in America and the American dream.  We knew our society wasn't perfect, but most of us believed that the country was going in the correct direction. So this wasn't rebellion so much as righteous idealism and working to make our society better.

It was before the disillusionment, perhaps it was the beginning of the disillusionment, which led to Black Bloq nihilism or heavy metal, gothic cynicism.  But perhaps most importantly it was at a time when university education was virtually free, leaving extra pocket money for good clothes.
