I have two very big piles - one is 6' x 8' and the other is 8' x 8'.  When we first moved onto this property (about 5 acres), my property-mates were horrified that I set up these two piles, complaining that they would smell, attract hungry animals and vermin and increase the "bug" problem.

But their fears never came to pass, because a well-run and well-maintained compost pile doesn't smell, isn't infested with vermin, animals stay away from it and bugs (beetles and such) don't leave the pile and move into the houses.

Now everyone loves the fact that we have beautiful, dark, fluffy soil to use in spring planting and to augment soil levels in potted plants.  Composting is a win-win - as soon as everyone is convinced their worst fears are baseless.

had a pile located against the detached garage.  I would collect fruit & veg scraps in paper bags, then take the whole bag and toss it onto the pile as I walked to the garage.  In the fall I added the leaves we raked.  Once a year, I turned the pile, whether it needed it or not. It may not have been a fast pile, but it worked, and even grew potatoes from the eyes I tossed in.

Now I have a fancy cylinder bin.  Sometimes I remember to spin it.

      Compost happens!

Socialist? I do not think that word means what you think it means.
