View Diary: How a salesman lost a sale (207 comments)

  •  Nearly the same 3 years ago when I was (22+ / 0-)

looking to replace my 20 year old vehicle.  I seriously wanted to buy US made (but no Dodge/Plymouth) and went to a Chevy dealer to check out their hatchbacks.  The salesman was quick to appear and laughingly steered me away from one with manual transmission by telling me "you don't want that one because you can't drive that", pointing with a further laugh to the manual shift.

Still chuckling, he pointed to an automatic transmission nearby and said "Honey, you can drive this one, it's automatic".

In no uncertain terms I told the man I had been driving stick shift since before he was even a twinkle in his daddys eyes (1972) and that I didn't appreciate his reference to me as "honey" and demeaning sexist assumption that women don't drive manual transmission vehicles.

I then went directly into the showroom and informed the manager of my encounter and their loss of a sale.  Sadly, the sales manager felt there was nothing wrong and didn't apologize because he said the sales person I was referring to was "experienced in handling ladies looking for cars".

I told everyone I knew to avoid that place like the plague.

There already is class warfare in America. Unfortunately, the rich are winning.

A former co-worker told me that the auto business was much more rife with sexism than medicine (we're both physicians).  In the 80's his wife was in sales at a large auto dealership.  At a staff meeting, after it was announced that the only other female employee had resigned, someone loudly said, "One down, one more to go."
