  •  Our 45-year-old John Deere (6+ / 0-)

riding mower also gave up the ghost this weekend (do they have a union that requires them to all stop dead on the same day?).  First the drive belt broke, then when that was repaired, it simply refused to start.  Nothing worked - not a clean spark plug, not clean fuel, not re-seating the drive belt, nothing.  Dear has decided it's time to buy a new one, after only 14 years of keeping this one running against all odds.  IT'S A MIRACLE!  Maybe the new one won't scare the hell out of the horses in the back pasture like the old one did when we were trying to start it or it finally came rattling down the driveway.

As Dear said when finally throwing in the towel (and various wrenches), "What the hell - it's only money.  Now we can get one that will handle a front-end loader, and a chipper, and an automatic-release mower deck, and...!"  Ah yes, boys and their toys.

"In this world of sin and sorrow there is always something to be thankful for; as for me, I rejoice that I am not a Republican." - H. L. Mencken
