  •  If there were a correlation between deployments (0+ / 0-)

and rapes, I might agree with you but I don't think one has been found. Rape has always been a problem, it's just been a secret one.

    •  Rape is an act of violence! (0+ / 0-)

The longer you're a war zone the more violent you become. There's also separation from Society at large and the social pressure to conform with societies rules. Look at Abu Graib where women were sexually assaulting prisoners. War brings out the worse in everyone.

But it's just my opinion, I haven't looked at the data to say for sure. I'm just trying to think what have we been doing over the last decade that could be leading to this increase in sexual assaults in the Military, What is different?

      •  War dies damage folks psychologically, that's for (0+ / 0-)

sure. But make them rapists? The numbers of rapes occurring have not risen dramatically since the war started... the number of reported rapes has. I think we're seeing a time when victims feel that they must come forward where in the past they didn't dare. Unfortunately, a majority still don't officially report.

Have you watched The Invisible War? If not, I wish you would. I think you would find it eye opening.

        •  Where's your beef with leadership then? (0+ / 0-)

Maybe I'm missing your point? If rapes haven't increased but reporting has then wouldn't it follow that leadership is doing a good job changing the culture? Something's wrong with what you are presenting?

          •  My bad.. (0+ / 0-)

I had to go back and re-read your diary because I was obviously under the wrong impression. I thought this was another bash the Military Diary. Sorry.

            •  Not a problem... it happens! (0+ / 0-)

I've been writing about this topic for about a year. I do have my beef with the senior leadership even as I see change being attempted. It's a messy, ugly process and it seems that we're seeing as many steps backwards as we are forwards.

Hope to see you in the comments next time I write.
