  •  Worst scandal was still Iran-Contra (20+ / 0-)

Treason, subversion of the separation of powers, perjury by the president, and it was all pretty much ignored because that nice Mister Reagan couldn't have meant ay harm.

    •  Yup (4+ / 0-)

Nixon would have won in '72 without the break-in.  Would Carter have won in '80 if he could have freed the hostages, and could he have done so had Reagan and Casey not promised arms to the Ayatollahs?  Funding right wing death squads in Latin America was, as Lt. Col. North said, "a neat idea."

Kissinger and Nixon pulled a similar stunt in '68, and LBJ even knew about it, but (a) didn't particularly want to help Humphrey, and (b) understood that exposing that the North Vietnamese were fielding offers from Nixon could blow up the peace talks entirely in the event Nixon won.  That didn't have the slush fund aspects of Iran-Contra.

If, however, Watergate is understood to encompass the larger scope of Nixon/CREEP campaign finance abuses and violations, the scandal is worse but not worse than I-C.

      Difficult, difficult, lemon difficult.
