Snow Dancer from the Looff Carrousel in Riverfront Park, Spokane, WA.  I caught several gold rings while riding her (with a dress on so I was riding sidesaddle, no less!).  This carousel is the stuff of which daydreams are made.

It's an antique carousel that used to be in Natatorium Park and was refurbished and put up at the site of the 1974 World's Fair after it was over.

I like a lot of the designs on that carousel.

      •  It was hand-carved ca 1909 (2+ / 0-)

Or, I suppose the work was done before then, but it was set up in Natatorium Park in 1909.

All of the horses and other animals are hand-carved wood.  No two are alike anywhere on the carousel.  The tails on those horses are real horse hair they had to obtain when they refurbished the carousel in the '70s.

If you saw it close-up, you'd swoon with admiration for the artistry all done by hand.  Really, it is that good.

Right after the horses were refurbished and repainted and tails found and replaced and the musical pieces fixed, etc., and it was set up, a person who was very dear to me unexpectedly turned up one day and took me out for lunch and then down to the newly refurbished carousel (his idea; I was fairly new in town and hadn't kept track of the refurbishing).  The horse I rode was Snow Dancer, and he took the horse inside from that next to me.  I was wearing a full-skirted dress (we'd gone out for a very nice lunch at a very nice place before he got the brilliant idea to go to the carousel), rode sidesaddle, and caught rings (and a couple of gold rings for free rides).

Obviously, the carousel held magic for me from that moment forward.

        :-)
