I've had to conclude that most of my conservative friends suffer from multi-personality disorder.  When the psycho-neurotic lizard brain is in charge I just have to ignore them until the rational human shows up again.

multi-personality disorder has nothing to do with politics, or lizard brain, or neurosis.

Please cite references, or please stop using mental illness to describe people that prefer fiction to fact. Thank you

So rare that it may well be fictional, or at least have been created out of whole cloth by the popularization of fictional accounts of it in the 1980s.

What I should have said is that I have to treat my conservative friends as if they had multiple personalities, not presuming to diagnose them as actually having that condition, or presuming to make light of what can be a very serious condition.

John Dean in "Conservatives Without Conscience" talked about "authoriatarian followers" - a mind set that people are just stuck with and they can't be moved by facts or reason.  So the issue is how to treat people whose brains just seem fundamentally miswired in a way where they can't be reasoned with but sometimes, especially in the case of family, you still have to maintain good relations.  Treating them "as if", knowing that they can't be reasoned with and just waiting until the subject changes to football or the weather, seems to work better than anything else.

Yes, I've tried to change the suject, walked into another room, if it was racial, once I walked out of that relatives house for a few months.

Some people can be reasoned with:I do mean it, if you persist with the racist talk, I am leaving.

The other: I was invited to watch cable to see congress rake over whoever testified. Then the altered emails showed up. Will that person change his mind? No.

Does he depend on a non-profit sponsored by a goverment to help feed him? Does he depend on subsidized rent? Does he depend on the Medicare prescripion plan? Yes to all.
