A random mob can terrorize. A terrorist attack concerns the people planning and carrying it out. #devilsadvocate

The first rule of government should be "Do no harm." The urge to act can frustrate the desire to help.

    •  Why then did Bush always refer to a War on Terror? (2+ / 0-)

"On 20 September 2001, during a televised address to a joint session of congress, Bush stated that, "(o)ur 'war on terror' begins with al-Qaeda, but it does not end there. It will not end until every terrorist group of global reach has been found, stopped and defeated."

"What do you mean "conspiracy"? Does that mean it's someone's imaginings and that the actual polls hovered right around the result?" - petral

In persuit of this never ending and ever evolving list of evil doers Superman -oop's- GWB set in motion the ongoing erosion of civil liberties we all enjoy today.  Throw in a healthy portion of irrational fear for fear's sake and behold, that which passes for meaningful dialogue in DC.

      how does it justify "scandal"?

        •  It isn't a scandal. (6+ / 0-)

And, no matter how you try to explain it, there IS no difference between terrorist attack and act of terror. If people are terrorized, does it really matter if it's from a known terrorist group or from just one person? And can we really have a War on Terror? (you might want to confer with Bush)

          •  Identity of attackers does matter. (0+ / 0-)

Especially in the context of an attack on a United States embassy. If it is mob violence of some grassroots level in a country, then how we respond and how we defend ourselves changes. If it is a terrorist attack by enemies of the state we are in and of our nation, then how we respond will change.

But I don't know why you think I'm saying this is a scandal. But to argue that there is no difference between terrorizing by an indigent mob and an attack coordinated and planned by some terrorist organization is not sound.

The first rule of government should be "Do no harm." The urge to act can frustrate the desire to help.

            •  It should be noted that the outpost was being (0+ / 0-)

guarded by Libyans. In fact, in addition to the four Americans who were killed, at least 10 of those Libyan guards were killed as well. So, I think we know who's on our side.

It was a CIA post. The embassy had a few rooms too, aka Consulate, Not Embassy. There is a difference. Consulates don't rate security (marines). Embassies must have them. Their job in an attack is to destroy sensitive information. Then get the employees out. I don't know if the fires were set by the terrorists, CIA operatives or both. I am pretty sure stuff got burned up in them that used to be in computers, files, safes, etc. Question I have is why the CIA didn't have enough security there. It's not like the GOP House is squeezing their budget.

The talking points that Obama and State had came from the CIA.  All changes were made by the CIA.

The GOP does not understand the CIA's functions, duties, history, etc. very well. See: Valerie Plame, Joe Wilson.

Shhhhh, sure they do. Like all other aspects of government, the new GOP uses knowledge and information however it works best for them.

              The underlying problem:
Flawed by Design: The Evolution of the CIA, JCS, and NSC
              Amy Zegart  2000
Screwed design followed by 60+ years of political and bureaucratic sausage and hay making... It's FUBAR.

wouldn't make that fine a distinction.

Terror is terror. Violence is violence. Dead is dead.
