  •  Wasn't it called a communicator on Star Trek? (6+ / 0-)

Sounds about right to me.  Which raises the other question, should dummies have smartphones?  How high a bar needs to set? Need one be in Mensa or just a dumb provocateur of even dumber sheeple?

    Heavy snark.

I can see, in Roddenberry's mind, the need to name this new thing for his TV show.  It's a handheld device for communicating through subspace -- a Communicator.

But the real world works more organically.

If Roddenberry's future ever happens, it will be a product of its past.  We will have had landline telephones, then car radio phones, then cell phones, then satellite phones, then smart phones, .... then (eventually) subspace phones.  And they'll all have been called simply "phones" by the people who actually use them.

So the great Communicator of Star Trek, if it ever happens, will just be called a "phone."
