  •  Investigation of leaks instead of terrorists (6+ / 0-)

As far as I can figure it out from the original story from the AP, this was never an investigation of some terrorist plot in progress, but instead it was aimed at the AP's sources right from the get-go.

The government would not say why it sought the records. U.S. officials have previously said in public testimony that the U.S. attorney in Washington is conducting a criminal investigation into who may have leaked information contained in a May 7, 2012, AP story about a foiled terror plot.
And they covered a LOT of communications!
In all, the government seized those records for more than 20 separate telephone lines assigned to AP and its journalists in April and May of 2012. The exact number of journalists who used the phone lines during that period is unknown but more than 100 journalists work in the offices whose phone records were targeted on a wide array of stories about government and other matters.

a government employee who leaked information to the AP.  If the information was classified, the government has a right to know which employee leaked it.  This isn't a whistleblower matter.  It involves a terrorist plot to blow up a passenger plane.

There is no existence without doubt.

where its illegal to give classified information to the media.
show me the number in the US legal code where thats illegal.

GOOD LUCK because there isnt one.

its not illegal. theres only a tiny percentage of cases where its illegal.

AND THEN the historical precedent of our Democratic Free Country That Is Not A Communist Nazi Shit Hole Full Of Skulls From The Fucking Killing Fields,

is that its de-facto not illegal.

During world war ii some isolationist asshole in Chicago published an actual story about how we had broken Japanese encryption codes. That, by itself, probably led to a bunch of dead US sailors and Marines because the Japanese then knew to switch their codes.

Prosecution of that newspaper? No. In the middle of a war where 400,000 Americans died? No. No no no. Not then.

Oh, but now, someone leaked a little piece of information about some bizarrely convoluted technical detail of some contingency operation (because of course The Great O Doesnt Believe In War) in some place that none of use can even pronounce, somehow that is going to bring down the whole fucking country if that fact gets out.

Think about it. You're basically arguing that if Facts get out about the Fucking War Thats Going On For Ten Years And Cost A Trillion Fucking Dollars, that somehow this is going to bring down an ungodly rain of fire on our fair nation and destory us..... . . . .

Unlike you know, WWII, where, you know, we actually got bombed and shit and 60 million people died.

      •  Yes, and now they have a bunch of personal (0+ / 0-)

cell phone records of a bunch of reporters and other AP staff that they can do whatever the fuck they want with.  Sounds like a good way to control how the press reports things to me as I am sure there is plenty of juicy blackmail fodder in there.  Or just post the full unredacted records on the DOJ website for everyone to download and go through.

You have watched Faux News, now lose 2d10 SAN.
