The supposed social welfare organizations that are funneling money to specific politicians are political.
The strategic leaks of this information is political.
The hyping of it in unison throughout the media is political
The politicians suddenly outraged that abuse of power occurs are political.
The IRS supes were being political.
The routine crackdowns on whistleblowing throughout govt is political.

Nothing inherently wrong with political motivations for certain behaviors and by certain actors, but the permeation of every institution by nakedly political actors with nakedly political ambitions and zero sense of self restraint is the logical outcome of a democracy far into decay. These institutions cannot "remain nonpolitical to retain exempt status" because they never were nonpolitical. It was all wink-and-nod when these groups were formed. The idea that the IRS was being used as a political weapon to cow some teabagging groups is getting a credible hearing because the examples of abuse of power are everywhere. The beauty of it from the scandal-mongerer's perspective is it doesn't even have to be true, just truthy.

What else would one expect from a government that everyone knows is a commodity?

And the politics - scandal! seesaw keeps everyone distracted from the fact that the country is being gutted...
